Lesego Sennelo leads a non-profit organisation, African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA), focused on the advancement of female African chartered accountants and the attainment of gender equity in the profession. AWCA uses a three-tier strategy to structure its activities—first, it identifies and mentors talented students (boosting their math skills and providing scholarship funding); then it provides leadership support; and finally, it networks AWCA members with corporate leaders. As a result of its activities the percentage of black women in the field has increased exponentially; from 1% to 11%.
She is also the Managing Director of AWCA Investment Holdings (AIH), an investment vehicle that was formed eight years ago by 60 black women chartered accountants who wished to create long-term wealth while also generating sustainable income for the African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA) forum. AIH currently has assets of approximately U.S. $3.4 million and represents over 2000 women chartered accountants.
While on Fellowship, Sennelo plans to research best practices that will support AWCA’s 2020 vision strategy— an expansion of AWCA’s activities beyond chartered accountants. Her long-term goals are to alleviate poverty by generating wealth through skill development, improve access to start-up capital in underserved communities, and build a women entrepreneur’s fund and professional network.
Lesego is a fellow of the International Women’s’ Forum, Eisenhower Fellowships 2016 Africa programme Fellow and an Aspen Leadership Institute Fellow. She formed part of the top team in the GIBS/IWFSA 2012/13 Strategic Leadership Programme. She also spearheaded the formulation and execution of the AWCA FQE
Preparatory Workshops and the AWCA Mentorship Programme named the Power Teas, both of which have become AWCA’s flagship programmes.
Her long-term goals are to alleviate poverty by generating wealth through skill development, improve access to start-up capital in underserved communities, and build a women entrepreneur’s fund and professional network.
Lesego is passionate about skills and leadership development and has mentored young professionals, both formally and informally, within and outside of the Accountancy profession.
