The Project, which is being done under the sponsorship of the Norwegian Government, intends to consolidate and advance the efforts of women leaders and gender activists toward focused outcomes in line with strategic initiatives of South Africa and Africa. The initiatives include the African Women’s Decade (2010-2020) declared by the Assembly of the African Union (AU), South Africa’s National Planning Commission and the New Growth Path.

At the centre of the initiative is the advancement of the status of women, improvement of the wellbeing of all and the fulfillment of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 2000 (Act 4 of 2000).

The approach builds on the collaboration of diverse bodies that will drive special focus areas aligned to the African Women’s Decade and South Africa’s priorities. These will be implemented through the following two strategic initiatives:

  • Eradicating Poverty and Reducing Inequality (Driving Partner: South African Women in Dialogue)
  • Corporate Leadership for Economic Empowerment and Increased Labour Force Participation (Driving Partner: IWFSA)
