  • Designation Founder & Director (Nicqui Galaktiou Inc)

Lesego Sennelo leads a non-profit organisation, African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA), focused on the advancement of female African chartered accountants and the attainment of gender equity in the profession. AWCA uses a three-tier strategy to structure its activities—first, it identifies and mentors talented students (boosting their math skills and providing scholarship funding); then it provides leadership support; and finally, it networks AWCA members with corporate leaders. As a result of its activities the percentage of black women in the field has increased exponentially; from 1% to 11%.

She is also the Managing Director of AWCA Investment Holdings (AIH), an investment vehicle that was formed eight years ago by 60 black women chartered accountants who wished to create long-term wealth while also generating sustainable income for the African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA) forum. AIH currently has assets of approximately U.S. $3.4 million and represents over 2000 women chartered accountants.

While on Fellowship, Sennelo plans to research best practices that will support AWCA’s 2020 vision strategy— an expansion of AWCA’s activities beyond chartered accountants. Her long-term goals are to alleviate poverty by generating wealth through skill development, improve access to start-up capital in underserved communities, and build a women entrepreneur’s fund and professional network.

Lesego is a fellow of the International Women’s’ Forum, Eisenhower Fellowships 2016 Africa programme Fellow and an Aspen Leadership Institute Fellow. She formed part of the top team in the GIBS/IWFSA 2012/13 Strategic Leadership Programme. She also spearheaded the formulation and execution of the AWCA FQE

Preparatory Workshops and the AWCA Mentorship Programme named the Power Teas, both of which have become AWCA’s flagship programmes.

Her long-term goals are to alleviate poverty by generating wealth through skill development, improve access to start-up capital in underserved communities, and build a women entrepreneur’s fund and professional network.

Lesego is passionate about skills and leadership development and has mentored young professionals, both formally and informally, within and outside of the Accountancy profession.

  • Designation Managing Director (AWCA Investment Holdings)

Soraya Benchikh has a 19-year career at British American Tobacco, during which she has held a wide variety of roles in finance and management.

Soraya began her career at BAT as Area Finance Manager in Switzerland, before cutting her teeth in North Africa where she was involved in establishing new operations for BAT in Egypt and negotiating joint ventures in Tunisia. She was also tasked with managing due diligence ahead of a bid for a bid for a large cigarette manufacturer in Morocco.

Since then she has held several regional roles in fast-growing markets in Eastern and Western Europe, before moving into general management. As General Manager for France, Soraya was tasked with the challenge of developing a turnaround strategy in a highly regulated and complex environment.

After three successful years in France, Soraya was appointed Managing Director of the Southern Africa Area in January 2016. Speaking about her role in South Africa, Soraya described the Southern Africa market as being “at a turning point” with her biggest challenge being to address the duel threats of increased regulation and illicit trade.

Soraya was born in Lebanon and spent some of her childhood in Nigeria before moving to the United Kingdom where she completed an Honours degree in Mathematics and a postgraduate accountancy qualification. She is fluent in English and French, as well as her native Arabic.

Her extensive experience in fast moving consumer goods also includes time at Gillette and General Electric, where she held the position of Finance Manager.

Soraya is an enthusiastic hiker and lives in Cape Town with her husband and their son
